But Katie Aloisi, the principal designer of Direct File said Thursday at the Code for America Summit that most of the Direct File team left the IRS, after being told to stop preparing the platform for next year’s filing season.

“Unfortunately, we were told to stop working on Direct File. Basically, the day we launch it at the beginning of the tax season is also the day that we start working on the next year,” Aloisi said. “And so when we were told, ‘Don’t keep working on the future state of Direct File,’ obviously, it was pretty bad news. So because of that, most of the team did leave.”

[Suzanne Chapman, the former design director for Direct File] said taxpayers who used Direct File claimed a total of nearly $216 million in tax credits. Billions of dollars in tax credits and benefits go unclaimed every year, because taxpayers are unaware, or the process to apply for them is too cumbersome.
