“Exclusive: US Airlines Are Quietly Hitting Solo & Biz Travelers with Higher Fares” [Thrifty Traveler]. “All three of the country’s largest carriers (American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta) are penalizing solo travelers with higher ticket prices than you can book when traveling with a group – sometimes, significantly higher.” • High time we taxed introversion!

“Why it can take hours to get through customs at LAX for some unlucky travelers” [Los Angeles Times]. “The worst time of summer 2024 to arrive at LAX’s international terminal was also Labor Day weekend, when wait times for U.S. citizens topped out at 74 minutes on average with a staggering peak wait time of 205 minutes, well over three hours…. On July 19, a TikTok user posted a video of a hellish line leading to customs, captioned “everyone back from their hot euro summer.” Two days later, another TikTok user posted an even longer line. His caption asked how the city could possibly fix the situation in time to host the Olympics in 2028.” • Good question. especially since we seem not to want foreigners in the country any more.

“Digital twin is a key to JetZero’s hopes for Blended Wing Body entry” [Leeham News and Analysis]. ” Little in the way of product development or new airplanes is expected at the Paris Air Show, which begins on June 16. No new commercial airplane programs will be forthcoming from Airbus, Boeing, or Embraer. Nor will any new commercial engines be forthcoming from GE Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, or CFM International (a GE-Safran joint venture)…. Boeing and Airbus have identified advanced production processes as key to the next new airplane, whatever it may be. When Boeing was pondering the New Midmarket Airplane (NMA) for the Middle of the Market (MOM), officials said production was more important than the airplane itself.” • Hmm.

“Ageing is linked to inflammation — but only in the industrialized world” [Nature]. “Researchers analysed inflammation-linked proteins in blood samples from people living in Italy and Singapore, along with those from Indigenous participants living in non-industrialized or semi-industrialized communities in Bolivia and Malaysia. They found that inflammation levels increased with age and were linked with illnesses such as chronic kidney disease in the Italian and Singaporean groups. But in the two Indigenous groups, inflammation did not increase with age or lead to health conditions. This suggests that ‘our assumption that inflammation is an inexorable, inevitable part of ageing is not true,’ says Thomas McDade, a biological anthropologist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. “We shouldn’t assume that the links between inflammation and ageing are universal.’” • Time for the dreaded life-style changes….

“I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling” [Sit In Shade]. • Fun!

“Flailing” [Seth’s Blog]. “[D]rowning people burn plenty of calories but they don’t go anywhere. When we’re confronting a new problem, more effort might not be the answer. It could be that we benefit by staying calm and focusing on our technique instead.” • I retain a sneaking fondness for Godin, even if he does work in the internet strategist/founder/self-help space. Somebody’s gotta do it…

“The Professor Tolkien Reads” [YouTube]. The Ride of the Rohirrim:

The bus thing would work for a car trip too. So a person could move around the car according to the map. …

I wonder if I’d worry about burning excess calories if I drowned? I think I’d be trying to float on my back (if I was conscious) but who knows? I’ve never come close to it.
